FareShared Food and Fun at Brighton Festival
14 September 2011
This weekend, volunteers from FareShare Brighton and Hove enjoyed front row seats to Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival’s Live Food Show. Soaking up the atmosphere in the Royal Pavilion Gardens, we spent the weekend chatting to festival goers, learning new recipes from the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership and eating FREE cupcakes. Not a bad way to spend a weekend!

With hundreds of visitors to the Big Sussex Market along New Road and the star studded Live Food Show, the weekend was a fantastic opportunity for FareShare Brighton and Hove to raise awareness about commercial food waste, and our work to redistribute the surplus to people in need in Brighton and Hove.
FareShare volunteer, Liz Davies said: “The weekend was a resounding success. I really enjoyed the event, and as always Brighton residents were friendly, easy to engage and generous. I would like to say a huge thank-you to the organisers of the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival for hosting such a fantastic event and for being so accommodating. Also thank-you to Margaret for my cupcake!”
This September there are more events to come to celebrate the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival. We look forward to ‘Apple Day’ at Stamner Park on Sunday 25 September.

A FareShare Food Fest
31 August 2011
Are you as excited about the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival as we are?
This September is dedicated to celebrating all things food and drink in Brighton and Hove. The month long event will see local food suppliers, cafes, bars and shoppers coming together to explore and share culinary tastes, both exotic and local.
We ask: what better time to reflect on the UK food system, and think about all the good food that is wasted when it could go to those in need?

FareShare Brighton and Hove continues to fight for those who struggle to access good quality, fresh food. We provide food for thousands of people in the city who are at risk of malnutrition, including children from poorer areas, isolated older people, rough sleepers, and women and families escaping abuse.
The food we contribute to these people’s diets is surplus food generated by the local and national food industry. The UK food industry currently wastes around 6.5 million tonnes of food, much of it good quality, edible food. So much food goes wasted but wanted. At this Septembers Brighton and Hove Food and Drink festival, come and find us to learn more about what we do, and how you can help.
We will be at the following events:

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS
This food festival is a fantastic opportunity for FareShare Brighton and Hove to engage with Brighton residents and visitors, and tell them about the services we provide in the city. It will be a great chance to ask them to dig deep and support a local charity.
We will have a fun stall with food related games and competitions.
If anyone is able to volunteer for this event, please let us know. Any time will be appreciated. We will of course provide support and guidance to anyone who is keen to get involved.

The results are in!
24 August 2011
Every year we ask our projects about what they think about FareShare Brighton and Hove, our services and our food.
It is important to us to find out what our community food members think so that we can continue to improve our services. We also like to find out what kind of difference we make to their projects and the thousands of people who eat with them every week.
We asked all of our community food members what would happen if FareShare Brighton and Hove closed tomorrow, and here are just some of the responses we heard:
|
“We wouldn’t be able to provide fresh produce, only tinned food. You guys are brilliant.”
“Our service would be greatly impacted. We would have to cut back at least two hot meals a week and we would have to cancel our healthy eating cooking class. It would also impact us financially as we would have to buy more food.”
“We simply couldn’t serve food and many of our clients only access the service because of the food!”
“We wouldn’t have the scheme running to encourage families into healthy eating.”
“We would certainly feel it in the cost of providing food. It would also reduce the range and quality of food we could provide. We’d also lose the sense of outside support that we get from working with FareShare.”
“The impact would be drastic. I don’t know how long we could survive without FareShare.”
|
We would like to thank all of our community food partners for taking part in the survey.

Spotlight on Rotary Clubs
17 August 2011
Rotary members from across the city provide substantial support to FareShare Brighton and Hove. Since becoming involved in 2003, members have volunteered their time to carry out at least three runs a week, driving the vans and delivering food to people in need. Rotary Club members also provide invaluable support for fundraising and awareness raising events, such as for the hugely successful Sainsbury’s food drive in July. Together they have donated over 4,300 hours to our cause.

We would also like to thank the Rotary Club members for their financial support over the years, through directly funding us, and through supporting our fundraising activities. With their links to prestigious people in the city, they have been an active partner in helping us to build relationships and approach local MPs.
On Wednesday 24 August, we will be welcoming Rotary UK President Burman to the FareShare Brighton and Hove depot, ahead of the Family Fun Day at Hangleton Manor organised by Rotary Clubs in Brighton.
FareShare Brighton and Hove is supported by three Rotary clubs in the city:
• Rotary Club of Brighton & Hove Soiree • Rotary Club of Brighton & Hove Breakfast • Rotary Club of Hove

Brighton shoppers’ generosity shows at Sainsbury’s meal drive for FareShare
20 July 2011
Shoppers at the Lewes Road Sainsbury’s were given the opportunity to learn more about FareShare and donate some food.
The weekend’s meal drive was an event hosted by Sainsbury’s national chain to help raise awareness about their charity partner, FareShare.
Sainsbury's retail and logistics director, Roger Burnley, said: "The food we donate to FareShare tends to be fresh produce as this has the shortest shelf life.
"However, to make a nutritious meal, you need more than just fresh food, which is why we would like to give customers the opportunity to donate store cupboard items through this unique trial."
Overwhelmed by the support, Nathan has been impressed by the amount of food kindly donated by Sainsbury's shoppers.
He said: "The event was a great success, we now have a large stock of food that we are not usually able to provide. The charities we deliver to are very happy to be able to cook food for their clients that is now even more nutritious and sustaining.
I would like to thank everyone who participated at this event and donated food."

Crates of food we received from the event, already heading out to projects.

A FareShare experience for Caroline Lucas
06 July 2011
Last week Brighton’s Green MP, Dr Caroline Lucas came to visit FareShare. Impressed by our organisation, Caroline has promised to come again and help out on a delivery.
Nathan showed Caroline around our warehouse of food stock and told her about all the different charities that we support in her constituency.

Caroline said: “Hard working volunteers in organisations such as FareShare play an invaluable role in helping to make Brighton a better, fairer and greener place.
"The work of FareShare in helping to feed the poorest and reduce food waste in Brighton & Hove is incredibly inspiring. Last year the service recovered 300 tonnes of perfectly edible ‘waste’ food from manufacturers and retailers in the city – a real victory for local sustainability.
“The fact that the organisation also offers people with little or no work experience a chance to train, work and build their confidence, shows that it’s possible to tackle social and environmental problems at the same time.
“Organisations such as these deserve far wider recognition and support for the services they offer.”
FareShare Brighton and Hove delivers to over 20 organisations in the Brighton Pavilion area. These projects use our food to feed many vulnerable people, including homeless people, women escaping abuse, unemployed people and elderly groups.

Pret a Manger Foundation pledges further support.
06 July 2011
Last week, the Pret a Manger Foundation Trust increased its financial support to FareShare Brighton and Hove, to invest in the increasing running costs of our vans. With higher fuel costs and maintenance needs, the Pret Foundation has come to the rescue to help keep us on the road.

Left to right: Nathan Au, Project Manager; Nicki Fisher, Head of Sustainability at Pret a Manger; and Pete Basterfield, Volunteer.
Nicki Fisher, Head of Sustainability at Pret a Manger, said: "The Pret Foundation Trust has a long history of working with and supporting FareShare, in particular the Brighton FareShare. We have seen first-hand just what an important role Brighton FareShare plays in the local community, ensuring that good food, which would otherwise be thrown away, gets to the people who really need it. We are delighted to continue supporting their good work"
The Pret a Manger foundation have been long standing supporters of FareShare Brighton and Hove. Pret a Manger stores in Brighton also donate much of their surplus stock to us. Our volunteers and Community Food Members love to eat Pret sandwiches, which are always made to high standard with fresh, quality ingredients.
We would like to express our huge thanks for Pret’s on-going support.

Blaker's Park picnic a windy success
06 July 2011
Despite the wind and the rain, Nathan had a fantastic time at the Friends of Blaker’s Park picnic on 18 June.
With the Varndean Samba Band playing and many other stalls, FareShare Brighton and Hove joined in with the festivities.
Joined by four volunteers, Lucy, Mel, Dean and Jean, FareShare Brighton and Hove were delighted to receive donations of tinned goods from revellers at the event.
A big thank-you to the organisers of the event. We hope to enjoy a bit more sunshine at next year’s Friends of Blaker’s Park picnic.

Local MP our latest volunteer.
15 June 2011
Last week Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove and Portslade, lent a helping hand in a bid to raise awareness about FareShare Brighton Hove.
He donned a FareShare Volunteer jacket and spent the morning driving our van on a food delivery run. He commented, “I had no idea of the numerous charities that Fareshare help locally. There is so much involvement in the local community on three levels, the way the charity has been set up, the people you have working for you and the people you deliver to, and the interaction between them all. A phenomenal success story, I am very impressed.”
Local MP Caroline Lucas has also volunteered to do a drive in July, and Mike Weatherly wants to do another drive again soon . He said ‘“I will be very happy to support FareShare in whatever way I can, this is certainly a Big Society project in action.”

Mayor visits FareShare Brighton and Hove
25 May 2011
|
The Mayor of Brighton, Hove and Portslade, Councillor Geoff Wells, visited FareShare Brighton and Hove to pledge support and encouragement.
Mr Mayor visited the depot in Moulsecoomb to see how the operation was run, and was very impressed with the scale and quality of food offered.
Nathan Au said: "It is great when people like the Mayor of Brighton, Hove and Portslade can take the time to visit us and see the work that we are doing. Every year we deliver hundreds tonnes of food and drink to homeless and disadvantaged people in Brighton and Hove, so we think it is a very important service in the city."
